Coastal sedimentary deposits of the Atlantic Coastal Plain of the southeastern U.S. (in yellow), the areas of focus for Heavy-Mineral Sand Resources in the southeastern U.S. project. These sediments are the deposits of shoreline environments that progressed across the southeastern U.S. from the Late Cretaceous period to the present coast. Effects of flooding on root dynamics appear nonlinear and therefore difficult to predict, leading to disparate and often contradictory reports of flooding impacts on production in bottomland hardwood forests. We explored root dynamics in two adjacent wetland habitats by comparing results obtained from several methods of estimating root processes.
Christensen's research focuses on the effects of disturbance on structure and function of populations, communities and ecosystems. On going studies include an analysis of patterns of forest development following cropland abandonment as these are affected by environment, stand history and plant demographic patterns. Moreover, the North American Coastal Plain – which includes all of Eastern North Carolina and stretches from New England to the Gulf Coast – .
3-D visualization is a powerful tool that can portray not only the structure and composition of forests, but also the spatial and temporal changes of a forest due to different disturbances or management treatments. The purpose of this project is to provide a tree image and ecosystem library of the Coastal Plain of South Carolina so it can be the base for the future projects in association with. Northeastern coastal forests of the Piedmont plateau and the Coastal Plain cover all or part of seven states, from northern Maryland to southern Maine. The ecoregion is dominated by Appalachian oak forests, characterized by white oak (Quercus alba) and northern red oak (Q.

Covered by shallow coastal waters during the Pleistocene, the resultant terraces and shoreline-related. Ineighteen counties in the upper and lower coastal plain of South Carolina were identified as high priority areas for bobwhite restoration. Within these counties there areacres of longleaf/slash pine and 1, acres of loblolly/shortleaf pine that potentially could be restored to functional pine savanna (USFS ).
